The Board
Sir Peter Middleton GCB Sir Peter Middleton GCB, Chairman (age 69) was appointed Chairman in 1999. Sir Peter joined the Board in 1991. This followed a long career in HM Treasury where he was Permanent Secretary. He is Deputy Chairman of United Utilities PLC, Chancellor of Sheffield University, a Director of the International Monetary Conference and a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He is Chairman of the Board Nominations and Board Risk Committees.
Independent non-executive Directors
Thomas David Guy Arculus Thomas David Guy Arculus (age 57) joined the Board in 1997. He is Chairman of Severn Trent plc, the UK Government’s Better Regulation Task Force and Earls Court and Olympia Limited. He is also a delegate of Oxford University Press and a non-executive Director of mmO2 plc. He was previously Chairman of IPC Media. He is a member of the Board Remuneration and Board Nominations Committees.
Sir Richard Broadbent Sir Richard Broadbent (age 50) joined the Board on 1st September 2003. He had previously been Chairman of HM Customs and Excise from 2000 to 2003. He was previously a member of the Group Executive Committee of Schroders plc and a non-executive Director of the Securities Institute.
Hilary Mary Cropper CBE Hilary Mary Cropper CBE (age 63) joined the Board in 1998. She is Honorary President of Xansa PLC and was previously Chairman. She is also an external adviser to the Home Civil Service Senior Appointment Selection Committee and a member of the Government’s National Employment Panel. She is a member of the Board Risk Committee.
Professor Dame Sandra Dawson Professor Dame Sandra Dawson (age 57) joined the Board in March 2003. She is KPMG Professor of Management Studies at the University of Cambridge, Director of the Judge Institute of Management and Master of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. She has also held a range of non-executive posts in other organisations including Rand Europe (UK), the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies, JP Morgan Fleming Claverhouse Investment Trust and Riverside Mental Health Trust.
Sir Brian Garton Jenkins GBE Sir Brian Garton Jenkins GBE, Deputy Chairman (age 68) joined the Board in 2000 as Deputy Chairman. He had previously been Chairman of The Woolwich since 1995. He is a former senior partner of Coopers & Lybrand Chartered Accountants and is President of the Charities Aid Foundation. He is a member of the Board Audit, Board Remuneration, Board Nominations and Board Risk Committees.
Sir Nigel Rudd DL Sir Nigel Rudd DL (age 57) joined the Board in 1996. He is Chairman of Pilkington PLC, Pendragon PLC and Boots Group PLC. He was, until recently, Chairman of Kidde PLC. He is Chairman of the Board Remuneration Committee and a member of the Board Nominations Committee.
Stephen George Russell Stephen George Russell (age 58) joined the Board in October 2000, having been a non-executive Director of the Woolwich Board since 1998. He was Chief Executive of Boots Group PLC from 2000 to 2003, is Chairman of the Board Audit Committee and is a member of the Board Risk Committee.
Dr Jürgen Zech Dr Jürgen Zech (age 64) joined the Board in 2002. He was previously Chief Executive of Gerling-Konzern and, prior to that, Chief Executive of Cologne, Re. He is also a non-executive Director of Misys PLC and Partner, Re Limited. He is a member of the Board Audit Committee.
